How I Afford to Travel | Guest Post by Frank Lee

There are a large number of people who have been bitten by the travel bug but there are very few who actually go out and travel just because they believe that traveling is an expensive business which requires a lot of money. This thinking prevents them going ahead and following their dreams but life doesn’t have to be like this especially when it comes to one of the world’s best activities – traveling around the globe. You don’t have to be rich or hold the key to something magical to travel around the world, all it takes is just some careful planning and a desire to travel.

Money is an important part of our lives and the vast majority of us don’t usually make enough to fulfill all our heart’s desires but traveling is not one of those things which need excessive amounts of money. There are simple things which many friends and I have experienced which you too can follow to save money on your foreign trips.

How I Afford to travel

Save Money

One of the best things to do is to save money from your earnings to pay for your travels at a later time. This is a great approach if you’re planning a trip with a fixed duration of time whether it is for a few weeks or a year-long hiatus from your normal life. You have to plan your trip and make a budget for it and figure out the savings you would need to make this trip happen. There are no rules for saving money so you should go for what looks best to you. One way of saving money is by canceling the subscriptions which you’re paying for every month.

Working When Traveling

One strategy which we’ve tried is alternating periods of job and traveling. You could work at a job for a year or more and then go on a traveling trip for six months or a year or as long as you like. There are other things which, like us, you could do to earn money while seeing the world. You could get a job at your destination which would allow you to explore the different places in your free time.

There are many places where there is a huge demand for English teachers and these jobs don’t usually require you to have any teaching certification. You could teach English as a foreign language for a few hours a day and earn enough to fund your travel in that country. If you have skills which can be marketed like being an artist then you can find ways of earning money through your artwork as well.

Work Online

As long as you have access to a computer and internet, you can make money in any part of the world. You could even ask your boss to allow you to work online if such an arrangement can be made. There are many freelancing jobs available on the internet as well; you can earn money by doing any one of a number of jobs which are posted on the internet every day such as writing, programming, graphic designing etc.

How I Afford to travel

One of the biggest expenditure any traveler faces is in terms of transportation costs but there are a number of ways of cutting costs for transportation. If you have a credit card, mostly in North America, you get frequent flyer miles with your credit card which can be used to get a free flight. All you need is a good credit which can be found after a little research on the internet. One good resource of finding cheap travel options is Groupon.

You should also book your flight from the right website or the right travel agent. Look for different websites which can book your flight for you and then compare the plans they’re offering. Booking your flight way in advance would also get you a cheaper ticket and you should avoid travel during peak periods as that is the time when airline companies charge the most.

In foreign countries, instead of getting a taxi or use any other mode of transportation, you could hitchhike and travel for free. These are alternative modes of travel which should be high on your plans for saving money while traveling.

There are so many costs which can be very easily avoided and the money you save can be put for your travels. Drinking and smoking are costly habits which are also harmful to you in the long run. Just by avoiding such habits, you can save yourself a lot of money which you can later use for your travels. Instead of hiring a cab for short distances, you should get in the habit of walking. Instead of spending on clothes every year, you could invest in a high-quality leather jacket, for example, which you can use for many years.
